Why You Shouldn’t Serve in Children’s Ministry or Maybe Why You Should

Posted on May 27, 2008 at 8:15am. No Comments

You’re too busy. You’re worn out from your own kids so you need a break. You don’t have kids. Your kids are grown up so “you did your time.” You travel a lot. Kids really aren’t your thing. You’re already serving somewhere.

But here are some reasons why you should volunteer in Children’s Ministry:

If your kids are grown, and especially if you “did your time” in Children’s Ministry - then we need your experience all the more, and our young families need you to come alongside them with your wisdom and encouragement! Now, more than ever, is time for you to get out and serve - not to bury your talent or lock it away. Travel schedules are tricky - but more than likely you have a friend or two you could team up with - so serving with Children would not only make a difference in their little hearts and minds, it would also develop your relationship with your friends!

If kids really aren’t your thing then you don’t have to be in a class with children. You can still serve in Children’s ministry to welcome parents, monitor security, prepare curriculum, or follow up with visitors, among many other possibilities. Our church has several fantastic Sunday Adult Fellowships - and they are an excellent place to connect and grow for a season. But they were never intended to become an end in themselves, nor were they designed to systematically prevent people from serving in other areas around church. The whole concept is to connect newcomers into community for the explicit purpose of moving them to maturity in Christ and hence inevitably into service.

In the end, it’s true that someone else will do it. Just like it’s true that if you don’t share your faith with that co-worker or neighbor, God will eventually bring some faithful witness along who will. But you will have missed the joyous blessing of participating in his life-changing work. So you can choose to let someone else have the incredible privilege of building into our children - let them have the joy of seeing a child understand the gospel at a deeper level - let them hold a child’s hand through a painful experience - let them be the one who gets invited to the graduation and then the wedding down the road.

The truth is that there is one biblical reason you shouldn’t serve in Children’s ministry. Only one. And that reason is that God has clearly and specifically called and gifted you for another ministry in your local church. And honestly, even then you should find a way to periodically share that gifting and passion for music or missions or whatever with our children.

There is no greater need in the body of Christ and no greater opportunity than the ministry we offer every weekend for our children.  If you are interested in volunteering with Children’s Ministry please email Tammy at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Blood Drive - May 10, 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in W - 2

Church at Charlotte will host a blood drive for the Community Blood Center (CBCC) on Saturday, May 10 from 8:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in W - 2.  You can register by clicking here.

According to CBCC’s website, “About 4 million people need blood each year—one every 12 seconds. Our local hospitals transfuse more than 100,000 blood components every year. When we think of the need for blood, we often think of emergencies, but for thousands of Americans, transfusions are a way of life. People who suffer from cancer, heart disease, leukemia and other major illnesses need blood on a regular basis to survive.”

Donors must be at least 17 years of age.  The donation process takes about an hour.  Each donor gives about a pint of blood.  All blood donations are processed and available for use between 24 and 48 hours.

CBCC is an independent, non-profit blood center.  Hospitals that receive blood from CBCC are:  Carolinas Medical Center, Carolinas Medical Center—Mercy, Carolinas Medical Center - Pineville, Carolinas Medical Center—University; Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia, NC; NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, NC; Rock Hill, SC; and Presbyterian Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital Matthews and Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital in Charlotte, NC.
