Simple Thinking

Posted on March 31, 2009 at 5:26am.

Lately there seem to be a number of people who are making the news because they have discovered the “truth” about Jesus and saying most of what we believe is in error. They state their case with all their degrees and intellect as overwhelming proof that we must listen and agree. Well I am a pretty simple man and believe that faith means accepting some things that can’t be proven. I also believe that the maker of something or someone is in the best position to know how it is supposed to work. When it comes to living my life I am willing to listen to my maker and how he believes I should live. Listen to the Psalmist and his thoughts.

“Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” (Psalm 119:129,130)

Call me simple.

Open Eyes

When I opened my eyes this morning I saw the colors of a beautiful sunrise. It gave me a picture of the awesomeness of our God. I want to see our great God in more than his creation so I begin the week with this simple thought from Psalm 119. Why not make it your prayer?

“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law (word)”

My Wife

“A wife of noble character who can find?”  That question is posed in Proverbs and I have an answer - my wife, Suzi.  For 33 of our 34 years of marriage she has walked my journey as a pastor’s wife with grace and beauty.  She has not only made ministry possible she has also ministered in wonderful ways.  She has raised three beautiful daughters and now also carries the name Mimi to our grand kids.  So today, on her birthday, I wanted to honor her.  Happy Birthday Babe.

Promises, Promises

“Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope. My comfort in suffering is this ; Your promise preserves my life.” Psalm 119:49,50

The hope of Christ in my life and the promises to which I anchor my soul are really just a few. First, God promises forgiveness of my sins through Christ. Second, Jesus promises to never leave me nor forsake me. The third one is a tough one - in this world I will have trouble (struggle). It is the last one however that cements my hope, because of Christ I have an eternity with God in heaven. Those are solid and they do preserve me in this uncertain world.

A Matter of Trust

Posted on March 26, 2009 at 8:04am.

My thoughts return to Psalm 119 today. It is the longest Psalm in the Bible, 176 verses, so I have a lot of material to look at.  In verse forty-one we read:
“May your unfailing love come to me, O Lord, your salvation according to your promise; then I will answer the one who taunts me, for I trust in your word.”

God’s love that will never fail, the salvation he so graciously provides are given to me through no merit of my own.  My responsibility is to trust in his word.  We live in a day and age where we have begun to wonder where we place our trust and hope.  Now more than ever I pray we are looking only to Jesus for the answer.
