Stirred By The Scriptures

Black Friday

Posted on November 27, 2009 at 10:07am.

Today is one of those fascinating days, created by marketing folks to convince us to get up at 4 or 5 in the morning to go buy things that will make our lives complete. I saw those hours from the comfort of my bed but there may have been many of you who were charging through the doors early this morning. All in the name of “stuff”. I know this will sound overly spiritual but am I charging to find God in the same way I look for bargain? Walt recently reminded the men of Jesus’ words - “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness…” There is nothing wrong with a good bargain. There is also nothing wrong with seeking Christ each and every day.

Thankful

I have been away from my blog for a few days and today will not be anything profound (that assumes some of them are). Here is my thought - I have so much to be thankful for. I hope on this day that is set aside for thanks you can find something to be thankful for. At the center of my gratefulness is Jesus who makes everything possible.

Looking for Some Sun

I am really hoping the sun comes out today.  After three days of rain it sure would be nice, but if it doesn’t today will still be a gift. Everyday that we are given is a gift from God.  There are days that sure don’t feel like it and I am not talking about the weather forecast. Those days are from the hard realities of life. I want ot be able in the midst of those “stormy” days to see each day as a gift from God’s hand.  Hard? Absolutely.

Doubt

Everyone of us has probably experienced times of doubt. We doubt ourselves, we doubt others and we even doubt God. Doubting God seems to be the result of timing and failure to act. God’s timing isn’t what I want and he apparently doesn’t act on my behalf and it leads to my doubting. In Isaiah 51:9 we read - “Awake, awake! Clothe yourself with strength, O arm of the Lord.” Isaiah is imploring God to act on his people’s behalf and to do it now. I wonder what it will be for me today? Doubt or patient trust.

Watching

Psalms 120 -134 are referred to as the Songs of Ascent. They were sung by Israel as they journeyed up to Jerusalem. Suzi reminded me of Psalm 121 last night and it was a needed reminder.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Then five times the psalmist uses this phrase about God -“watches over”. I look to a God who watches over me and my life, he watches over you and your life. This all powerful, creator God is aware of all that is going on in my world and he will not fail.
