December 31st, the last day of this year. Tomorrow when we get up it will be 2010 and a new decade. There will be a whole lot of speculation about the kind of year it will be. People guessing about the housing market, the financial outlook and the progress against terrorism. Truth is none of of can know for certain but there are some anchor points we have. God is good all the time, all the time God is good. God is still on his throne and in control and Jesus is still the savior of the world. Happy New Year.

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me - ” these are Jesus’ words in John 10. To be known by the one who is our shepherd is a wonderfully comforting truth. He knows our lives and everything about us but there is another part to that verse, equally important - we know him. To know the voice of our savior and to recognize how he calls us to live. Do you know the voice of Jesus, can you hear him speaking - then follow after him.

We got a phone call late on Christmas Day that a dear friend had passed away. This godly woman had been a significant person in Suzi’s life as a new believer. She had endured a lot of heartache in her lifetime and had maintained an enduring faith as a picture of her trust in Jesus. I found it ironic that as she celebrated for the 92 time Jesus’ birth she was ushered into his presence to celebrate eternal life.

“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.” Luke 2:6
May you have a blessed Christmas as you celebrate the birth of Jesus - our Savior.

No, the title isn’t a mistake for many people that is what this season of the year is. It is a mess. At some point, in most of our lives, the mystique of the holiday loses its luster. We realize all is not peace on earth, goodwill to mankind. There are marriages on the rocks, job futures uncertain, tensions in relationships and disappointments a plenty. It is at that point that the real hope and joy of Christmas shines brightest. Jesus, the baby born in Bethlehem is our hope. Maybe in the messiness of Christmas we will look to the simplicity of Christmas and find hope.
